Hypertension

Hypertension is a common medical condition that is also termed as “high blood pressure”. Hypertension has become commonplace in India; however, it can bring some chronic health conditions if overlooked or not treated in time. This problem occurs when the blood pressure inside the arteries elevates with a high force that damages your arteries’ walls and causes artery damage. Also, when your heart pumps blood against high blood pressure, it contracts and enlarges, unlike any muscle function when it has to do more work ( for example- weightlifter ).

According to the reports, the prevalence of hypertension in India is around 20 to 40% in urban areas and 12 to 17% in India’s rural states. It is seen that one in three Indians is afflicted by high blood pressure. This problem doesn’t show any apparent sign or symptom at an early stage; some people have also lived for years without experiencing any symptoms. There are a plethora of causes that are held responsible for giving birth to this problem in your body.

Hypertension continues to damage your heart and blood vessels, even without showing any symptoms. This is a severe health condition that can induce some chronic health problems inside you, including stroke and heart attack. Let’s gain some more insights about this problem so that you can prevent this threat in time before it knocks on your door.

What are the symptoms of hypertension?

As discussed in the beginning, unlike kidney failure, hypertension doesn’t have any symptoms or signs at the beginning, even if the blood pressure readings show a high-red alert during the test. It’s been found that few people experienced mild symptoms that include the following-

  • Headaches
  • High blood pressure
  • Nose bleeds

These three symptoms aren’t specific and can also vary from person to person.

Why do I have hypertension?

The disease is commonly diagnosed in people who are of 50 years or above. Besides ages, there is a myriad of factors that give oxygen to this problem in your body. Here we’ve compiled a list of some factors that are responsible for high blood pressure.

Alcohol abuse

Overconsumption of alcohol can elevate blood pressure. Women who drink alcohol every day are more likely to get afflicted.

Obesity

People who are obese or overweight are more commonly reported to have hypertension. If you’re overweight, your heart has to pump more blood throughout your body, leading to high blood pressure.

Kidney disorder

Apart from filtering your blood from harmful toxins and other pollutants, your kidneys also produce many hormones in your body that regulates your blood pressure. Kidney obstruction or disease can cause these hormone levels in your body that can cause high blood pressure.

Medications

Ingestion of strong medicines such as pseudoephedrine ( Sudafed), Afrin, and birth control pills can significantly increase blood pressure.

Illegal drugs

Ingestion of illegal drugs such as cocaine and amphetamines can give a spike in your blood pressure.

How can hypertension be diagnosed?

Hypertension can be detected by measuring the blood pressure with the blood pressure cuff that is placed around the bare and stretched out upper arm. This is a simple routine checkup that can be done at your nearby pharmacy or doctor’s clinic. Two blood pressure ranges are named systolic, and diastolic blood pressure and are done when your heart relaxes. Here we’ve also mentioned the ranges of abnormal and normal blood pressure readings that can help you to detect the threat level.

Normal:<120/80

Prehypertension: Between 80-89 for diastolic pressure and 120-139 for the systolic pressure.

Hypertension

>140/90 if age is above 60 or if you have diabetes or kidney disease.

>150/90 if your age is above 60 or if you have no diabetes or kidney disease at present.

Ayurveda is a science of life that works on three major principles that are
