The signs may include: –

  • – Skin or red-colored welts that may appear anywhere on the skin.
  • – Welts may be different in size. They change shape and color and appear and fade frequently.
  • – Painful swelling in the eyelids, lips, and inside the throat.
  • – Itchy skin which is painful to touch.
  • – The signs may flare up with triggers such as heat, change in weather, exercise.

Acute hives appear suddenly and go away within a few weeks, unlike chronic hives, which stay for a long time period such as months or years.

When to see a doctor –

Consult your doctor if you have severe signs of hives that continue to exist for weeks. Chronic urticaria does not cause any severe allergic reaction. Until there are severe or serious allergic reactions, there is nothing to be worried about. But seek immediate emergency care if there is a severe allergic reaction. Troubling signs such as dizziness, swelling in the body, breathing issues should be addressed immediately.

What are the different types of urticaria?

Types of hives –

1. Allergic reactions- This is the most prevalent form of urticaria that occurs because of an allergic reaction. The causes include:

  1. foods
  2. pollen
  3. insect bites or stings
  4. dust mites
  5. medications

2. Anaphylaxis – Anaphylaxis is a severe form of urticaria. In this condition, the hives are accompanied by breathing issues, swelling, nausea, and vomiting. Seek immediate medical care when this happens.

3. Chronic hives- Chronic hives are cases that have no known cause. Chronic means long term, and they may come and frequently go for years. Basically, they are recurring hives that can impact your lifestyle routine.

Welts that do not go away within 1.5 months also come under the category of chronic hives. This form of urticaria is hard to treat in the first place. They may occur because of some underlying condition, such as: –

  • lupus
  • celiac disease
  • type 1 diabetes
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • dermatographism
  • thyroid disease

Dermatographism clears up on its own and does not need any specific treatment approach.

4. Temperature-induced hives – Changes in the body temperature can also trigger urticaria in those who are temperature sensitive. Cold-induced urticaria is due to cold weather or temperature, or air; on the other hand, exercise-induced urticaria is caused by physical activity.

5. Infection-induced hives – Both viral and bacterial infections can trigger urticaria. Common bacterial infections such as UTI or strep throat cause bacterial hives. Yet virus can also cause infectious mononucleosis, hepatitis, can also cause urticaria.

Diagnosis of urticaria disease –

The doctor begins with a physical examination to understand if the red patches are urticaria or something else. He may ask you questions about your medication, supplements, diet, and painful flare-ups of urticaria.

If the physical exam and medical history diagnose you with hives, the doctor will begin blood and skin tests to know the underlying cause of urticaria.

  • Home remedies
  • Cut down on alcohol
  • Avoid certain medications causing you trouble
  • Avoid stress
  • Choose soaps, creams, and detergents that are mild on your skin
