Thyroid

How is Ayurvedic Treatment Effective in Curing The Thyroid ?

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped organ in your neck, slightly above the collarbone. The thyroid has two side lobes connected by a bridge ( isthmus ) in the middle. Usually, you cannot feel your thyroid gland when it is normal in size. The thyroid is loaded with blood vessels. Even the nerves that control the voice quality also pass through the thyroid.

It is a part of your endocrine glands that produce hormones for various regulatory functions. Collectively these are called thyroid hormones. The primary hormone it secretes is thyroxine, also called T4 that controls your heartbeat, influences metabolism, growth and development, and body temperature. In infants, an ample number of thyroid hormones are crucial for brain development. With changes in thyroid hormones, there can be many disturbances in the normal function of the body, and it would require an ayurvedic treatment for the thyroid to control the imbalance in the hormones.

Thyroid disorders can range from a small, harmless goiter to life-threatening cancer. The most common of these is the abnormal production of thyroid hormones. Too much thyroid hormone results in a disorder called hyperthyroidism, while inadequate hormone secretion is called hypothyroidism. The complications may make you sick, but mostly it is not tough to diagnose and provide a thyroid treatment with Ayurveda.

Who may have a thyroid?

The thyroid can affect anyone, men, women, infants, teenagers, and the elderly. But women are more likely to be affected by a thyroid condition than men do. It can be present from birth and develop as you tend to age. The thyroid is a common disorder that affects millions of people yearly.

The ayurvedic treatment for thyroid has a different way of curing the disease in an individual. From women to men and children, everyone requires a treatment based on their body type, which is perfectly provided with natural ayurvedic treatment.

An individual is at a higher risk of developing thyroid disease if they: –

  • Has a medical condition (these can include anemia, type 1 diabetes, primary adrenal insufficiency, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, etc.).
  • Is taking a medication that’s high in iodine (amiodarone).
  • Is older than 60, especially if women.
  • Has had treatment for a past thyroid condition or cancer.

Reasons that cause thyroid disease –

The two main conditions of thyroid are hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Both the conditions are triggered mainly by other conditions that influence the functioning of the thyroid gland.

Conditions that likely cause hypothyroidism includes: –

  1. Thyroiditis: – It is an inflammation (swelling) of the thyroid gland. Thyroiditis can shrink the number of hormones the thyroid gland secretes.
  2. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis: – It is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s cells start to attack the thyroid gland. It remains painless and is known to be an inherited condition.
  3. Postpartum thyroiditis: – Develops in pregnant ladies. The condition occurs in around 5 to 10% of women after childbirth.
  4. Iodine deficiency: – An iodine deficiency is the main reason why people suffer from a thyroid disorder.
  5. A non-functioning thyroid gland: – At times, the thyroid gland does not function well after birth in babies. If left untreated, the baby could have physical and mental problems as he grows up. This is why doctors usually conduct a blood screening test to check for thyroid function as the baby is born.

Conditions that likely result in hyperthyroidism include: –

  • Graves’ disease: – In Grave’s disease, the thyroid gland may produce too much hormone and signaled overactive. It is also called the enlarged thyroid gland or diffuse toxic goiter.
  • Thyroiditis:- Thyroiditis is a painless condition that causes inflammation of the thyroid gland.
  • Nodules: – It can be caused by nodules that are overactive within the thyroid. A single gland is called a toxic autonomously functioning thyroid nodule, while a gland with a myriad of nodules is called a toxic multi-nodular goiter.
  • Excessive iodine: – Taking too much iodine can trigger thyroid hormones in excess of normal. Too much iodine is also found in some medications, such as amiodarone or in cough syrups.

The Indicators of thyroid disease –

During a thyroid disease, multiple symptoms can be observed by the individuals. Unfortunately, these symptoms may correlate to other conditions that are often nonspecific. This can make it challenging to recognize if the disease is thyroid or something else. Thyroid treatment with Ayurveda has its own natural ways to look out for the signs and symptoms of thyroid.

Ways of Diagnosing thyroid imbalance –

  1. Anti-TPO antibodies: – In autoimmune thyroid disease, proteins destroy the peroxidase enzyme, which helps produce thyroid hormones.
  2. Thyroid ultrasound: – With the help of the reflected sound waves, abnormal tissues of the thyroid can be detected.
  3. Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH):– This hormone is secreted by the brain to help regulate the production of thyroid hormone. High TSH levels indicate hypothyroidism, while low TSH shows hyperthyroidism.
  4. T3 and T4 (thyroxine):- The primary forms of thyroid hormone T3 and T4 are checked with the help of a blood test.
  5. Thyroid scan: – To detect the thyroid gland, a small amount of radioactive iodine is given through the mouth to get images of the thyroid gland.
  6. Thyroid biopsy: – This type of test is done with the help of thyroid tissue being extracted with the help of a needle.
  7. Thyroglobulin: – A substance secreted by the thyroid to know if a person has cancer or not. High levels indicate the recurrence of cancer.
  8. Other imaging tests:- Imaging tests such as CT scans, MRI scans, or PET scans can help identify the spread of cancer.
